The Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca is the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe. Once upon a time, cultures thrived side by side in the beautiful city of Toledo, Spain. The city was known as, “The City of Three Cultures.” The buildings and streets still resemble this time-period.
The buildings also represent a dark time and reminder of what can happen when negative opinions about a culture arise. The Catholic Church declared war on other beliefs with the Pogroms of 1391. Mass violence was held against Jews throughout Spain and the synagogue was taken by the church.
