The Basilica and Convent of Saint Francis in Quito, Ecuador is one of the oldest and most important religious sites in South America. Construction began in 1535 right after the Spanish moved into Quito. It took more than a century for the completion of the church.
Nicknamed, “Escorial of the New World,” the church complex blends Spanish, Indigenous, and Moorish artistic influences. The Incan workers mixed Incan artwork into the Catholic iconography.
